“History stuff” is what Wendy Beavers, assistant professor of history at Bluefield University, hopes her students walk away with an interest in.
“I love to learn and teach new information,” Beavers said, “to see new students every semester who maybe never liked history, then to see some of them by the end of the semester say, ‘Hey, maybe this history stuff is pretty interesting.'”
The Career Pathways courses in the general education curriculum have been a hot topic in both student and faculty circles. Are the courses effective? Do students find them helpful? What are the pros and cons? We thought we’d ask BU students to share their thoughts on Career Pathways classes.
Graduating seniors are all too familiar with one question: What are your plans after graduation? As Commencement Day, May 2, approaches, we thought we’d ask Bluefield University’s graduating seniors what comes next. For some, the future includes continuing their education, while others plan to step directly into the workforce.
At Bluefield University, the campus may feel small, but the journeys that lead students here are anything but. For international students, arriving in Bluefield means crossing not only state lines, but also oceans, time zones, and cultures. From navigating visa paperwork and long flights to adjusting to Appalachian winters and Southern hospitality, these students bring with them resilience shaped by distance and determination.
To some, the phrase “local history” is synonymous with antiquated buildings and dull insignificance. But history is not just facts – it’s a collection of stories.
“A lot of times, it’s not the building,” said Wayne Pelts, assistant director of the Academic Center for Excellence and Careers (ACEC). “It’s the people, it’s the stories, it’s those movers and shakers.”
The first “Ram of the Week” of 2026 was sophomore Isaiah Sanders of the Bluefield University men’s basketball team. What began as a simple desire to play college basketball has turned into a place Sanders now proudly calls home at BU.
After almost four years of service to Bluefield University, Provost Michael Salmeier is bidding farewell to BU.
